2009 July 18 Lott garden update.  Boise, Idaho

Our small yard garden is now blooming with merigolds.  We picked one of David and Meriam's giant cabbages about 2 weeks ago and it weighed 10 pounds.  We picked one today that weighed 27 pounds.  They are about 24 inches across.

We cut the cabbage into 10 sections and took it to the garden share table at the church this afternoon.  We took the only piece left home and shredded it for salad with scones for lunch today.

This is the stem of the cabbage we picked 2 weeks ago.  We cut the cabbage off of the root with a knife and cleaned up all of the big refuse leaves.  Then these little cabbages grow off of the remaining stem.  We trim back all but the healthier ones so that they will actually make a nice cabbage at each start. These little guys are about 7 inches across already.  You would have to trim the number to one or two if you wanted a larger tighter cabbage sooner.

Our blackberries are beginning to turn color and will be turning black in the next week.  Our temperatures have been near 100 for a over a week.

Meriam brought a fresh strawberry pie for dinner tonight.  This picture shows the bowl of strawberries we picked today.  It will just about be our last. The harvest is almost over.  I picked these blackberries on the Feather River bank on my way home from Chico, California yesterday.

New apples are still green.  Both of our apple varieties turn red at the end of the year.

Santa Rosa plums are not ripe yet.

Things are growing nicely.  The merigolds are filling out and have been blooming since 2 weeks ago.  Our radishes keep wanting to go straight to seed because of the heat.  We forgot to mulch the onion, carrot, and dill seeds so they didn't come up as easily and are pretty thin this year. It would help if we planted these items in March when the weather is cool.  The swiss chard in the front of this picture are doing very nicely.

Our flower row left of the tomatoes are finely looking like plants.  There are merigolds in front, nasturiums next, then moss rose, and fennel.  The left row is golden beets in front, kohlrabi center, and red beets at other end.

pumpkins need to be thinned.  Canteloup and watermelon are beginning to bloom.

The small plants between merigolds and corn are okra.  They are growing very slowly but from experience we know they will soon be 4 feet tall.
